I happened to be eating a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich when I read this. I feel like this essay made my day in much the same way your email made Larry’s. Excuse me, I’m going to rewatch Dave now.
That is an amazing story. I also realize that between Blondie comics and movie like these, my childhood conception of adulthood was just guys making giant sandwiches out of whatever they wanted at midnight.
Like the others, now I want to watch Dave and try the sandwich. And yes to PB&J, too. That classic sandwich keeps ending up in my writing. And my meal planning.
I really loved this story a lot! However I have to disagree with the choice of sandwich, as the greatest sandwich in cinematic history has to be Zac Efron's in 17 Again. Sure it's a little unconventional but I reckon the sweet and savoury combo would be DELICIOUS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtsGWFiDimU&ab_channel=KirstenKeith I have been dreaming of making this since I first saw the movie and your story has made me wonder why I haven't!!!
I really enjoyed this essay. Random calls that bring to mind random experiences of our own. I loved Dave and have seen it more than once but why am I forgetting the sandwich? I must watch it again with a certain intention this time! Thank you for your excellent writing!
Yes, 'Dave' is one of my favorite films, too. But I've never considered the draw of the sandwich itself in the sandwich scene; what I remember about that scene is how Dave accepts the Secret Service agent as an equal, perhaps as more than an equal, as they talk about the agent's willingness to give his own life to save that of the president, or of the president's stand-in. And what better way to acknowledge one another's humanity than by breaking bread together?
The other thing that I appreciate about your story is the power of random connections, even if you never did make one with Kevin Kline. Your efforts certainly went round-about. And who knows? Mr. Kline may yet come across this story and reach out to you. Most actors are just regular people, and they appreciate knowing about how their work has affected viewers, whether profoundly or for fun.
I found this through Jami Attenberg but of course it syncs up with my current bunnyhole on sandwiches and sliced bread! Random is the magnet in my compass. And tomorrow is the 95th birthday of sliced bread! Thanks for a great read.

Team PB&J, here. What a lovely story. Random acts and sharing kindnesses, it's good stuff. And makes me want to rewatch Dave.
But now I can't help wondering if bits of my information are out there somewhere enticing people to click on vitamin pill pop-ups
Well Jason, this is how you get someone into a paid Substack. 10/10! No notes! Loved it.
🙌🙌🙌
This DID NOT go where I thought it would go, and I loved every minute of it. (And now really want that sandwich.)
DELIGHTFUL.
Thank you!
